FAQ
WHAT IS A WOMEN'S MOSQUE?
1. A woman's mosque is one that is lead, controlled, and maintained for the purpose of providing Muslim women a safe, unrestricted place of worship and learning. Women are in leadership.
2. WHY DO WE NEED A WOMAN'S MOSQUE?
We don't "need them" but we do need to address the problem of patriarchy and how it damages the spirits of women and their self image and ability to be free thinkers, and to engage in self directed worship and study. Women's mosques per se are not unique and have been around for centuries, we go beyond the typical women's mosque.
3. WHAT DOES INCLUSIVE MEAN?
Inclusive means no one is turned away. No judgements are made by looking at someone's clothing, race, gender, or sect. We embrace the differences of people and celebrate diversity. Trans people are welcome and are a part of our mosque.
4. ARE MEN ALLOWED?
Men most certainly are allowed and are part of QBM. We treasure our brothers and we want them to learn how to be with women, and not have to control them or feel they need to be over them in any way.
5. DO WOMEN WEAR HIJAB AT QBM?
Women at Qal'bu Maryam do wear hijab, we ask that women cover to pray. That's all. However we can't and won't force anyone. Women who do not wear hijab are welcome. If you don't typically wear hijab to pray or worship or you practice a faith that does not call for it, please pray as you see fit.
6. DO YOU FOLLOW A FIQH? DO YOU FOLLOW THE SUNNAH OF THE PROPHET?
Yes we do follow the sunnah, we research, and fact check constantly to make sure we stay within the perimeters of appropriateness, and tradition. We do not follow any fiqh there is no requirement in Islam that one has to.
7. DO WOMEN LEAD PRAYER? DO WOMEN CALL THE ADHAN AND GIVE THE KHUTBAH?
Yes, they do, and men do too.
8. WOULD I HAVE TO PRAY NEXT TO A WOMAN? WOULD I HAVE TO PRAY NEXT TO A MAN?
Because we do not segregate the sexes, chances are you will be praying next to the opposite sex. So far we have had no problems. People have been relaxed, respectful and proper. We would ask that you not come to disrupt. If you do not want to pray next to a man or woman, QBM is not for you. (If you are shy and want to try, there is ample space for you).
